The organizers of the NABA Champions League intend to run it as a for-profit venture, with the explicit purpose, over time, to facilitate a zero-cost to the participating teams. This will not happen from Day 1, but slowly over time, as retained earnings of the tournament are re-invested in the participating teams, their players and the tournament as a whole.
The tournament organizers intend to fund the NABA Champions League through four funding sources:
Player Membership Fees
(paid by the players)
For age verification.
For status validation.
For player valuation.
For health vitals.
Team Subscription Fees
(paid by the teams)
Team registration.
Player recruitment.
Roster submission.
Sponsorship & Underwriting
(paid by the sponsors)
Arena leasing.
Game day jersey.
Rules control.
Stats and records.
Game day refreshments.
Passive Income
(paid directly by YouTube)
AdSense revenue
Product placement
Video sponsorship
The tournament organizers reasonably expect that the revenue generated from AdSense revenue, product placement and video sponsorship (Passive Income), over time, will supersede the need to charge fees to the Teams for team registration, player recruitment and roster submission. Eventually, the funding sources will be dwindled down to three (from four). The tournament organizers cannot know from Day 1 when this will occur, however, the expectation is that, eventually, Passive Income, Sponsorship and Underwriting shall account for over 90% of funding.
The intention of the tournament organizers is to create a for-profit legal entity to provide a proper legal framework to the tournament as a whole. The milestones for the existence of this legal entity shall include registration with (a) the Registrar of Companies, (b) the Value Added Tax Service, (c) the Director of Social Insurance, (d) the Cyprus Basketball Federation and (e) the European Amateur Basketball Association. All of the above milestones, once met, shall allow for the tournament as a whole, and all the teams registered under it, to benefit from the trade in digital (e.g. YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok) and traditional media (e.g. Cablenet, CyBC, AlphaTV). Teams shall benefit from this legal framework with an ever decreasing cost to play in the tournament which shall eventually dwindle to zero. Players shall benefit from this legal framework with stable and affordable fee structures that nonetheless provide all players ever increasing freebies and game day services.
The tournament organizers intend to run the NABA Champions League tournament from January to April (inclusive) of each calendar year. This tournament is not to be confused with the NABA Summer Tournament ("Kalokerino") which shall continue to run from May to July each year, utilizing the existing 1st, 2nd and 3rd division tournament structure. The intent of the tournament organizers is that based on availability of a suitable indoor arena, and the magnitude of interest from players, teams and the tournament organizers, the 2024 NABA Champions League tournament shall either be an Double Round 8-team or a Single Round 16-team affair, which in either case shall have a duration of 16 weeks from Monday January 8th 2024 until Friday April 26th, 2024.

The tournament organizers intend to run the NABA Champions League tournament from one and only one indoor basketball arena, to facilitate team onboarding and offloading, fan participation, stats and record keeping and game day rules control protocols. The preferred venue is Lefkotheo Indoor Arena, because it is close to Apollonio Private Hospital, in the rare case that a serious medical issue is experienced on game day. Also the Lefkotheo has ample parking for game day fans to utilize.
The tournament organizers intend to maintain compliance with the laws of the Republic of Cyprus, the bylaws and regulations of the Cyprus Basketball Federation, and the medical protocols of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cyprus, through an executive team comprised of athletes, bureaucrats, tournament sponsors and shareholders in the legal entity to be formed. As the tournament shall be governed by a for-profit legal entity, and the framework that that entails, there shall be no elections for the executive team, but rather the shareholders of the legal entity, through their Board of Directors, shall appoint the members of this executive team. The tournament organizers reasonably expect to hold one annual general meeting per year. This meeting shall, for all intents and purposes, serve as the main source of information regarding funding, legal, compliance and scheduling concerns.
